Quick Answer

Sonic stakes send low-frequency vibrations through the soil every 30 seconds or so. Here’s the part most pages selling them leave out: UC IPM tested this class of device and frightening devices “haven’t been effective in research trials.” So this page isn’t going to claim they work. If you buy them, treat them as a maybe around a single bed and put the real effort into trapping.

The Gear

Solar Sonic Repeller Stakes

Solar-powered stakes that emit low-frequency vibrations every 30 seconds. No batteries or power cords required. Worth knowing up front that UC IPM found devices of this kind haven't been effective in research trials.

Best for: People who want to try a non-lethal option around one bed and understand the research doesn't support it. Trapping is what addresses the population.

The Process

  1. Identify the active zone by locating fresh mounds and probing for main tunnels.
  2. Drive stakes into the soil every 15–20 feet along the active perimeter — not just in the middle of the yard.
  3. Make sure the solar panel faces direct sun; shaded stakes lose charge fast and stop pulsing.
  4. Leave them running continuously for at least 2 weeks before judging results — and judge honestly against the mound count, not against hope.
  5. If new mounds appear outside the staked zone, the gopher moved — reposition stakes to cut off the new run.

What the Research Says

UC IPM’s pest notes are direct about this: “Frightening devices such as vibrating stakes, ultrasonic devices, and wind-powered pinwheels haven’t been effective in research trials.” (Source: Baldwin, R.A. — UC IPM Pest Notes: Pocket Gophers, 2025)

That’s the research, and this page isn’t going to argue with it. Moving the stakes around periodically gets suggested as a workaround, but no study backs that either. What actually clears a yard is trapping.

Bagger Pro-Tip

Think of sonic stakes like a fence you’re not sure is switched on. They don’t kill anything, and the research says they don’t reliably move anything either. If you put them along a garden edge, keep trapping the main population at the same time — that’s the part that works.

Safety Warning

No rodenticide involved and no trigger mechanism, which is what makes them unobjectionable in a yard with a dog in it. Two real risks: driving the stake into an irrigation line — probe the soil first if you’re near drip lines — and leaving a hard stake at shin height where kids run.

If you’re shopping at the cheap end, it’s worth knowing what I’ve already ruled out — gum, coffee grounds, cayenne and soap are covered in the home remedies that don’t work. For the trapping side of the plan, see the gopher traps I actually recommend. Shop Solar Sonic Repeller Stakes on Amazon →

Timing matters more than most people think. Spring (Feb–May) and fall (Sep–Nov) are when gophers are most active — trap during a surge and you'll catch within hours. Miss those windows and you're chasing a slow target. See the full Seasonal Guide →
