Quick Answer
Gopher mesh is one of the most reliable long-term defenses for raised beds and sensitive planting areas. Proper depth and overlap are the difference between fortress and buffet.
The Gear
- 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth
- Wire cutters
- Staple gun or landscape staples
- Shovel
- Work gloves
Recommended Gear
1/2-Inch Galvanized Hardware Cloth
Heavy-gauge galvanized mesh that keeps gophers out of raised beds and planting areas for years. The 1/2-inch opening is the right spec — smaller openings restrict root growth; larger ones let juveniles through.
Best for: Lining raised beds, building wire baskets around individual plants, or installing vertical barrier skirts.

- Measure the bed footprint and cut hardware cloth panels with at least 6 inches overlap on seams.
- Excavate around the bed perimeter 18-24 inches deep for a vertical barrier skirt.
- Line the bed bottom with mesh and fold edges upward to connect with side barrier panels.
- Secure all seams with ties or staples so no gaps exceed 1/2 inch.
- Backfill soil, then inspect yearly for corrosion or disturbed edges.
Bagger Pro-Tip
Overlap your seams like roof shingles—gophers are many things, but they are not licensed contractors.
Safety Warning
Wear heavy gloves while cutting mesh; galvanized edges can cause deep lacerations.
