Quick Answer
Before the romance: UC IPM says installing owl boxes is “unlikely to reduce gopher numbers enough to prevent damage,” and that owls are “unreliable… particularly over small areas such as a yard.” A box is worth putting up if you want owls on the property and you like the idea of something hunting for free — but if you want the gophers gone this season, set traps. This is the slowest method on the site and it is not a defense on its own.
The Gear
- Barn owl nesting box (pre-built or DIY plywood)
- 4x4 post, 12–16 feet tall, or a sturdy existing structure
- Lag bolts and drill
- Predator guard (metal baffle for the post)

Barn Owl Nesting Box
Pre-built nesting box designed to the correct interior dimensions barn owls need. Skips the DIY plywood math, stays weatherproof longer, and gets installed faster so owls can start scouting sooner.
Best for: Larger properties with open hunting ground — fields, orchards, acreage. UC IPM is clear that owls are unreliable over an area as small as a yard.

- Mount the nesting box 12–16 feet off the ground — higher is better. Face the opening away from prevailing wind and direct afternoon sun.
- Install a predator guard on the post so raccoons and cats can’t reach the box.
- Place the box near open hunting ground — a field edge, orchard row, or large lawn. Owls won’t hunt dense brush.
- Leave the box completely alone for the first season. Human disturbance during nesting will cause abandonment.
- Clean out old nesting material each fall (after fledglings leave) to encourage reuse the following spring.
Bagger Pro-Tip
Don’t expect results in year one, and don’t count on this one for damage control at all — the research doesn’t support it at yard scale. Barn owls scout territory for months before committing. If you’re rural or semi-rural and you can wait a season, it’s still the most appealing idea on this list — a resident pair working your ground every night at no ongoing cost.
Safety Warning
Never disturb an active nest. Barn owls are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act — interfering with an active nest is a federal offense. Once they’re in, leave them alone and let them work.
