Quick Answer

Gophers avoid plants with strong-smelling roots, toxic compounds, or fibrous root systems they can’t easily chew. Swapping high-risk plants (roses, fruit trees, root vegetables) for resistant varieties in gopher-heavy zones won’t eliminate the problem but it can reduce the damage and the replanting cycle.

The Gear

No special gear required — just smart plant choices.

Protecting High-Value Plants

1/2-Inch Galvanized Hardware Cloth

When gopher-resistant plants aren't an option — young fruit trees, established roses, root vegetables — hardware cloth wire baskets give them physical protection gophers can't chew through.

Best for: Building wire baskets around individual high-value plants or lining raised beds before planting.

Gopher-Resistant Plants Worth Knowing

Good choices for California yards:

High-risk plants to protect or relocate away from active zones:

The Process

  1. Walk your yard and identify which plants are taking repeated gopher damage.
  2. For high-value plants you can’t replace (mature fruit trees, established roses), shift to hardware cloth barriers rather than hoping gophers will leave them alone.
  3. When replanting damaged areas, choose from the resistant list above where possible.
  4. Use resistant plants as a border around garden beds — a ring of lavender or rosemary won’t stop a gopher but it reduces entry points.
  5. Combine plant selection with active trapping in any zone where you’ve had consistent pressure.

Bagger Pro-Tip

“Gopher-resistant” doesn’t mean gopher-proof. A hungry gopher in a bad year will eat things it normally ignores. Use resistant plants as a risk-reduction layer, not a replacement for trapping.

Safety Warning

Euphorbia sap is a skin and eye irritant. Wear gloves when handling and keep it away from areas where kids or pets dig.

Get the Gear

No gear needed here — but if you’re protecting high-value plants, pair this approach with hardware cloth baskets. The basket and mesh options are in my gopher gear guide. Shop Gopher Mesh & Hardware Cloth on Amazon →

Timing matters more than most people think. Spring (Feb–May) and fall (Sep–Nov) are when gophers are most active — trap during a surge and you'll catch within hours. Miss those windows and you're chasing a slow target. See the full Seasonal Guide →
